THE MACS
CHAPTER ELEVEN

THE MACS (11)

Matthew relived the awful time
Recording events of the day
Steeled himself in telling of his brother
Who had crossed in the Indiansí way!

Few words exchanged to show their closeness
Kept themselves in check
Death ever-present all around
Survived by stiffening their neck!

They all had an overpowering will to win
This tattered rabble in arms
Cheered when Cornwallis surrendered
Returned in droves to their farms!

Yet the English had another agenda
Prizing riches of this vast new land
Grudgingly conceded that won by blood
Then drew a line in the sand!

Tenaciously holding to the paradise
West of where the Rebels reside
Theirs to take any way they could
A matter of guile and pride!

Indians rampaged as war went on
Many a settler fell
In vicious attacks, bloody and gruesome,
Witnesses too stunned to tell!

Summoned once more by their intrepid leader
Promoted and now General Clark
Attacked the Shawnees of the forest
Many a long house dark!

Indians urged on by perfidious loyalists
Perfecting the redmanís style
Of lying low in ambush
Combined with British guile!

Names of these traitors
Etched in annals of our land
Remembered well by generations to come
Written by an eye-witness hand!

CHAPTER TWELVE

THE MACS (12)

America’s children learn to despise
Benedict Arnold and his ilk
Others less known with fetid reputes
Reek like rotten milk!

Caldwell, McKee, and the Girty brothers
Led Indians in horrible raids
Chilling these crimes committed
Since savages mutilated babes!

It’s not to permanently curse
The blood line of treacherous men
Who betrayed not only their country
But families of nearby friends!

Neither gloss these grave crimes
Perpetrated in acts of greed
Nor believe this fatal flaw
Becomes part of the seed!

Quicksilver Sean loved his role
The thrill of risking life
Spent time on the river building boats
Finally took himself a wife!

Matthew made his way back home
To a spouse and an only son
Who born on the eve of this war for freedom
Now big enough to carry a gun!

Where did they go those brave souls
Whose lives long ago ran its course
Fought so courageously against great odds
Withstanding overwhelming force?

In ashes of time we see their deeds
To condemn or forever admire
The unborn child will be there to judge
Flames of our present fire!
